First Grade Spanish
In first grade this year, we are continuing to build our vocabulary and communicative ability by using short stories as our base. We preview the vocabulary, read the stories together, reenact them, and do all sorts of speaking and writing activities to follow up. The students seem to really enjoy this approach---just ask them about "Chocolate caliente!" Below is a list of competencies the students should have by the end of the year.
*Students will be able to share unique cultural aspects of chocolate caliente mexicano
*Students will be able to demonstrate comprehension of four seasons vocabulary
*Students will be able to share likes and dislikes using ‘me gustan’ in directed activities
*Students will be able to share unique cultural aspects of Perú
*Students will develop a working knowledge of the pronouns ‘yo’ (I) and ‘tú’ (you, informal)
*Students will be able to retell a simple story using learned text
*Students will be able to answer the question ‘¿Cuántos años tienes?’ (How old are you?)
*Students will be able to identify tooth traditions from Spanish speaking countries
*Students will be able to use greetings with each other & teacher
*Students will be able to use appropriate manners vocabulary, in context
*Students will be able to demonstrate comprehension of, and identify, members of the family vocabulary
*Students will be able to answer the questions ‘¿Cuántos?’ (How many?), ‘¿De qué color es? (What color is it?) and ¿Qué es? (What is it?).
Additionally, we will continue to learn about various traditions and celebrations in the Spanish-speaking world, as well as learn vocabulary for more American-only holidays and some traditional prayers in Spanish.
