Kindergarten Spanish
This year, our kindergarteners are learning through a primarily storytelling-based approach. We sing songs, reenact the stories with puppets and flash cards, and do all sorts of movement-based and fun activities to reinforce their learning. To say that these guys are amazing would be an understatement! So far we have learned to greet each other, ask for and tell our names, and ask and tell others how we're doing. We have also learned about several items in nature through our "Buenos días" story, learned to make a BIG sandwich with lots of cheese in "El sandwich de Mateo", and to count the fish that our friend Arturo the donkey catches in "1-2-3". Next, we will be describing those fish by color and whether they are "grande" (large) or "pequeño" (small) in "Arturo y la bota." We will have a new story approximately every other week.
By the end of the year, these are the competencies we expect students to have in Spanish:
*Students will be able to use greetings with each & teacher
*Students will be able to use appropriate manners vocabulary, in context
*Students will be able to count to 10
*Students will be able to identify colors
*Students will be able to answer the questions ‘¿Cuántos?’ (How many?), ‘¿De qué color es? (What color is it?) and ¿Qué es? (What is it?)
*Students will be able to demonstrate comprehension of, and identify, members of the family vocabulary
*Students will be able to demonstrate comprehension of, and identify, fruit vocabulary
*Students will be able to retell a simple story using learned text
*Students will be able to use adjectives of size to describe nouns
*Students will be able to answer the question ‘¿Cuántos años tienes?’ (How old are you?)
*Students will be able to identify Hispanic Christmas traditions related to the Three Kings
*Students will be able to identify tooth traditions from Spanish speaking countries
Additionally, we will take time out to learn about other cultural celebrations, both in the English- and Spanish-speaking worlds, and we will learn some basic prayers in Spanish, beginning with "Angel de mi guarda", or "My Guardian Angel." If you would like to practice the vocabulary and prayers at home, there are links to our Quizlet page as well as a recording of the prayers.
