Second Grade Spanish
In 2nd grade Spanish, we continue to build upon what the students learned last year and expand their vocabulary and communicative abilities. The students should be able to do the following things in Spanish by the end of the year: greet each other; count 1-20; describe items by their color; talk about their school and school supplies; discuss their family and pets; identify parts of the body; talk about food and what they like and dislike; role play a restaurant scene; identify and categorize farm animals; and tell us about their birthdays. To reinforce this vocabulary, you can work with your child on the Quizlet website at home; just use the link provided below. We are also learning about the Spanish-speaking countries of the world and some special cultural celebrations. This is a very bright and energetic group that is off to a great start!
August: We began the year by reviewing classroom rules and procedures in Spanish. This group is still working on remembering to raise hands to speak, listening to Señora Ortegón and other students when they are talking, staying in our seats, and keeping our hands and bodies to ourselves.
September 1-15: We have reviewed having basic conversations to state our names, how we're doing and how old we are. We will continue to add more to our conversations with each new theme.
September 18-October 3: We have been studying the 21 Spanish-speaking countries and numbers 1-20. We will be learning to ask for and give our phone numbers and are learning special number poems to help us remember them (think: "One, two, buckle my shoe..." in Spanish!).
October 10-27th: We are reviewing vocabulary for colors and telling our favorite color, as well as gearing up for learning about "Día de los muertos" next week!
October 30th-November 3: We will be learning about the traditional Mexican and Central American celebration of "El día de los muertos" or "Day of the Dead." Sign up here to send in items for our classroom "ofrenda" or altar.
